In AID's vision, the electoral and political reform is an essential condition of Romania's sustainable development, while "the vote" is one of the most important mechanisms for building democracy on solid grounds. The vote is not only a practice of democracy, but also a mandate given by the citizens to the politicians to use the public resources for the benefit of all citizens.
The grounding of the citizen's vote should be made on the basis of the cognition of the electoral programs and ideologies of the political parties, stressing on the concrete projects proposed by the political parties for their mandate.
For these reasons, AID considers that informing the citizens objectively about the programs and goals proposed by the politicians is very important and necessary. At the same time, we consider that these programs must be treated with seriousness and responsibility by both parties, and should represent a 'contract' between the candidates and the citizens whom there are representing.
As candidates, it is in the politicians' duty to propose concrete initiatives and projects oriented towards the development of the Romanian society, while as citizens, we have the right to call our political representatives to account for their actions. Still, exercising this right can be very difficult and hard to quantify as long as citizens are not informed of the programs proposed by the political candidates before elections.
Through the "National Electoral Transparency Initiative" program, AID supports the reforming of the Romanian political system and encourages the election of the candidates under the basis of the electoral programs and objectives set by each political party or coalition. Within the "Citizen's Electoral Guide", we have synthesized, together with the parliamentary political parties, the top 10 most important objectives of the programs proposed by the parliamentary political parties and coalitions for the period 2004-2008.
At the same time, AID considers that the values, principles and ideologies of the parties should have a significant importance in the grounding of the citizen's vote. The values and principles promoted by each party provide a general reflection of the political approach and general missions of each party, while the citizen can identify himself much easier with a certain group of values and principles.
